LAURINBURG -- Mount Olive recorded its second-highest, single-game scoring outburst in a 107-55 thrashing of in-state Conference Carolinas women's basketball rival St. Andrews on Thursday evening.
The Trojans logged a school-record 119 points against Belmont Abbey during the 1995-96 season.
Senior Jasmine Whitby pumped in a game-high 20 points and picked the Knights for six steals. Laporsha Davis knocked down 17 points, while Destinee Webb poured in a career-best 14 points. Webb dished out six assists.
Andrea Jones and Joneiqua Gary rounded out the double-figure efforts with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Brittany Miller contributed nine points.
Shequanta McGee collected six steals for MOC, which registered 31 steals as a team and forced 37 St. Andrews turnovers.
Mount Olive (7-4 overall, 4-1 CC) built an early 11-4 lead as Whitby scored six of the Trojans' first eight points and Davis hit a 3-pointer with 17:05 remaining in the first half. St. Andrews (0-10, 0-6) got as close as four points on Rebecca Bryant's 3-pointer, which closed the gap to 13-9.
Whitby and Miller combined for the first nine points of an 11-0 Mount Olive run and the Trojans led in double figures the remainder of the game. Benee Norton's basket with 11:22 left ended a four-minute St. Andrews drought, but Mount Olive came back with 15 unanswered points.
Webb's 3-pointer with 6:50 remaining gave the Trojans a 39-11 lead.
MOC led 59-22 at intermission.
Men
LAURINBURG -- Brandon Allen and Derek Staton each established a new career high in scoring, but St. Andrews turned back Mount Olive 98-87 on the Conference Carolinas men's basketball scene Thursday evening.
The Knights snapped an eight-game skid against the Trojans.
Allen delivered a 32-point outing and pulled down seven rebounds. Staton tickled the twine for 29 points, passed out a team-best four assists and shot a school-record 15 of 15 at the free throw line.
Freshman Dory Hines provided 10 points and five rebounds.
Leading by five late in the second half, St. Andrews fouled Staton on a 3-point attempt, and Staton made all three to cut the deficit to 82-80 with 2:52 to play.
Aaron Christian responded for the Knights, sinking a clutch 3-pointer with just five seconds left on the shot clock. Allen countered with a 3-pointer to make it 85-83 with 2:39 to play, but Christian drove the lane for a layup on the other end to put the Knights back up by four.
Allen missed a 3-pointer and the two teams traded turnovers. Christian collected a steal for St. Andrews and got fouled with 1:44 to go. He made the first throw and missed the second, but Streater came up with a key offensive rebound and got the ball back to Christian, who was fouled again.
Christian sank both free throws, putting the Knights up seven again at 90-83 with 1:39 to go, and Mount Olive could get no closer. The Trojans, who had a very good night overall at the free throw line (33 of 42, 79 percent), missed one of two attempts on three straight possessions in the closing minute.
St. Andrews made 10 of its last 12 free throws to seal the win.
MOC fell to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
