ELIZABETH R. SUTTON

Elizabeth Royall Sutton died at her home in Goldsboro May 24, 2016.

The daughter of William Allen and Elizabeth Waddell Royall, she was born in Goldsboro Nov. 10, 1924.

She is survived by her husband, Bryan Sutton; daughters, Katherine Broderick Brady, husband, Michael, and Anne Randolph Sutton of Durham; granddaughters, Holly Sutton Broderick and Alice Royall Broderick; and her sister, Pamela Royall Lawrence of Goldsboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Katherine Royall Williams.

She was a graduate of Goldsboro High School and St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh.

After an interval of varied employment in Goldsboro, Elizabeth attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a degree in English. She was a member of the Glee Club, Chapel Hill Chorus and Chapel of the Cross Church.

Elizabeth returned to the University of North Carolina as a student over the years, obtaining a teaching certificate and eventually a Master of Education degree.

Her work in education was, for the most part, in Goldsboro City Schools as a first grade teacher and reading specialist. She also taught kindergarten and music in the Protestant School.

She was active in the work of the North Carolina Education Association, serving twice as president of the Goldsboro unit, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society of women teachers.

All through the years, Elizabeth was a part of the life of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where she was a member and soloist of the choir, a Sunday school teacher, guild chairman, convention delegate, vestry member and youth advisor.

After retirement, she had time for her favorite hobby, duplicate bridge, serving as president of Goldsboro Duplicate Bridge Club and delegate to Unit 199 of the American Contract Bridge League.

The funeral service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Goldsboro Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m.

The family will receive friends in the church parish hall after the service.

Inurnment will follow at Willow Dale Cemetery.
