ERNEST DEWEY 'MICK' MCCARTY

April 14, 1943-March 11 2015

Ernest Dewey "Mick", McCarty 71, Midlothian, Va., passed away March 11, 2015, after a brief illness.

He was born April 14, 1943, in Goldsboro, N.C., where he lived before moving to Chapel Hill, N.C.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Marguerite and Ernest Dewey of Goldsboro, N.C., and his mother, Jean D. Spicer of Durham, N.C.

His father, Marquis McCarty, died during World War II.

He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy, where he was a world class member of the swim team, and attended Elon University in North Carolina.

Mick proudly served in the United States Navy Submarine Service, and was active during the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

After leaving the Navy, he moved to Richmond in 1967, and attended VCU.

Mick loved life, lived it to the fullest and lived it his way.

He loved building houses, his vegetable garden and his dogs (Shannon, Cate, Cooper and Duie), and was devoted to his family and friends.

He is survived by his three sisters, Laura S. Martin of Richmond, Va., Jean D. Spicer of Montpelier, Va., and Kirby Spicer of Chapel Hill, N.C.

He is also survived by his devoted former wife, Karen Rapp Sherwood, and his dedicated friend, Fred Sherwood.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., Richmond, Va.
