WINNIE LOUISE DURANTE BREWINGTON

Sept. 2, 1932-Feb. 22, 2015

Winnie Louise Durante Brewington was born in Goldsboro N.C., Sept. 2, 1932, to the late Mr. Clifton "Nick" and Annie Huntas Smith Durante. She transitioned Sunday Feb. 22, 2015, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center following a lengthy illness.

Winnie was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Hershey L. Brewington; brother, Leroy Durante; and sister, Elizabeth Swinson.

In her later years, she was known as "Bit" by her family and close friends.

She graduated from Dillard High School with honors at the age of 16 years old.

Winnie graduated with honors from Elizabeth City State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1953. She attended East Carolina University in Greenville N.C., receiving a Reading Certification in 1975, a Master's of Art degree in education in 1981 and a supervision certification in 1982.

She worked more than 30 years in education. She taught elementary school in Laurinburg, N.C.

She returned home to teach in Goldsboro City Schools. She served as a classroom teacher, reading teacher, staff developer and director of the Follow Through Program for Goldsboro City Schools.

After retirement in 1992 and her love for teaching and learning, she continued to work with students for many years.

She joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church at an early age.

In 2011 she transferred her membership to The Lord's Table Church, and worshiped there until her illness prevented her from attending Sunday services.

Winnie was a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators, Dillard alumni class of 1950, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Red Hat Society and other clubs.

Winnie loved family gatherings, shopping and traveling. She was always ready to go, as long as it was not air travel. Her most favorite pastime was traveling to casinos.

She is survived by her son, Derek Scott; a granddaughter, Nia Richardson; siblings, Gloria Whitehead (Wilbur), Kenneth Durante (Charlotte), Jimmy Durante (Montrose), Clifton Durante (Vickie) and Delores Bradley (Walter); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The sorors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will conduct the Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony Thursday at 6 p.m. in James T. Haskins Memorial Chapel of Haskins Funeral Home.

Her funeral service and burial will be private.

Haskins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
