Leslie Edwards "Red" Thompson, 89, of Goldsboro passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

A service celebrating Red's life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vann Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at home of Kim and David Farmer.

Mr. Thompson was a native of Wayne County and the son of the late Leslie B. Thompson and Mallie E. Thompson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Edna Askew Thompson. Red was a life member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church where he held many positions in the church. He was a graduate of Rosewood High School and attended North Carolina State University.

Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II, serving in the Mediterranean. He was a charter member of the Rosewood Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 49 years and held the position of Chief for 13 years. He was a life member of the Wayne County Fireman's Association and served on several committees.

Mr. Thompson farmed and worked in construction for 20 years. He taught Construction Industry at Southern Wayne High School and later retired from The Boling Company with 20 years of service as a superintendent.

Mr. Thompson is survived by a daughter, Patricia T. Pellet and son-in-law, Thomas W. Pellet, a son, Larry R. Thompson and daughter-in-law, Melanie H. Thompson, a daughter, Kim T. Farmer and son-in-law, David L. Farmer, a son, Eddie Thompson and daughter-in-law, Susan T. Thompson; sister, Helen T. Thompson; sister-in-law, Carolyn Thompson; 11 grandchildren, Scott Pellet, Chris Pellet, Tara Thompson, Amanda Thompson Quinn and husband Travis, Brett Farmer and wife Melissa, Drew Farmer, Aaron Thompson, Anderson Thompson, Anna Thompson, Justin Gardner and Josh Gardner; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews he loved very much. He is also survived by a special friend, Sara Edwards. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Thompson; and his sister, Marjorie M. Overman.

We would like to give a very special thank you to his caregivers, Susan Martin, Paige Regan and Kathy Fischel who cared for Red over these past several months. Simple words cannot express our gratitude. Also a thank you to the wonderful staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center for the love and care they provided for Red during his final days
