GOLDSBORO -- Emmie Lee Whaley Best, 92, passed away on Monday at her home in Kirkwood Retirement Village.

Mrs. Best was born in Wayne County on Sept. 29, 1922 to the late Elmer Samuel and Kizzie Emmie Surles Whaley. She was married to the late Edgar Lee Best. Mrs. Best was a member of the Salvation Army Church and was devoted to its ministry for many years. She had worked as a sales clerk for the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Mrs. Best was also a member of the Disabled American
Veterans Auxiliary.

Emmie Lee will be remembered for her unconditional love as a wife and mother, and a friend to all. So, too, will she be remembered for her compassionate spirit and soul, and her gift of finding joy in doing random acts of kindness for others.

Family was paramount to Emmie Lee, and she loved nothing more than her husband, her children and grandchildren. She was the embodiment of love as we have been taught by our Savior, Christ Jesus.

A service celebrating Emmie Lee's life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Captain Kenny Igleheart and Major Paul Kirkpatrick officiating. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mrs. Best is survived by her daughters, Linda Carol Jackson of Dudley, Rebecca Diane Howell of Omaha, Neb. and Becky Lynn Gibbons of Kinston; seven grandchildren,16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William Edgar Best, and her brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Linda Jackson.
