Jane Perry Cates, an exceptional woman, 72, Plantation Road, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a 3-plus-year battle with stage four colon cancer.

Ms. Cates was a member of the bridge club and past member of the city council planning board.

She was the first ever warden's secretary for the Federal Penitentiary in Butner, N.C.

She was an instrumental reason Butner, N.C., received a library and elementary school.

A retired national project manager for the IRS in Washington, D.C., she had her own tax preparation business, Ammons and Cates, in Goldsboro, N.C.

Ms. Cates is survived by two sons, Randall Perry Pickard of Creedmoor, N.C., and James Nichols Cates of Goldsboro; daughter, Sharon Alane Canovali of Greensboro; grandson, Landon Gray Pickard; granddaughter, Crystal Pickard Watts and husband, Caleb; sister, Paulette Sawyer and husband, Bill, of Cary; and nephew, Andrew Sawyer, wife, Crissy, of Fuquay-Varina.

Jane is also survived by her companion, Patrick Norris.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at noon at the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.

Visitation will be held prior to service from 11 to 11:45 a.m.

Entombment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Dudley.

The family requests that any donations made in her honor/memory go to Kitty Askins Hospice and/or The Colon Cancer Alliance.
