LULA FAIL LITTLETON CARLSON

Oct. 20, 1918-Oct. 23,2014

Lula Fail Littleton Carlson, 96, Goldsboro, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Lula was born in Wayne County Oct. 20, 1918, to the late N.W. and Mary Wilkins Fail. She was married to the late O.P. Littleton and Arnhold Grant Carlson.

Lula was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church. She was devoted to her church, and was involved in many activities where she used her gifts and abilities to share the love of God.

Lula had also been a member of Home Rebecca Lodge.

Lula leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and support to everyone she encountered, particularly those in need. Her enthusiasm and love of life will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family will receive friends in McChesney Hall at First Presbyterian Church from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, followed by a service celebrating Lula's life at 2 p.m. in Black Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Leigh Gillis officiating. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Lula is survived by her sons, Dr. Phillip R. Littleton and wife, India Smith Littleton, of Williamsburg, Va., Gerald W. Littleton and wife, Andrea "Andy" Untz Littleton, of Raleigh and Dr. Robert E. Littleton and wife, Rebecca "Becky" Bumpass Littleton; sister, Louise Kesslick and husband, Bob, of Greensboro; brother, Jack D. Fail and wife, Dena, of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who always referred to Lula as their favorite aunt -- sometimes as their "Goldsboro Mama."

The family would like to express its appreciation for the 10 years of compassionate care provided by Dr. Mitchell Heflin, geriatrician at Duke Medical Center.

Love and heartfelt thanks are expressed to her caregiver and friend for nine years, Jessie Whitaker, and most recently Angela Covington, whose cheerful and pleasing manner brightened Lula's every day.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to First Presbyterian Church, 1101 E. Ash St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
