MARGERY WATERS WESTRAY

Margery Waters Westray, Chapel Hill, passed away peacefully at her home in Chapel Hill Oct. 13, 2014, after a brief period of declining health. She was 94 years of age.

Margery, daughter of Charlie Dudley Waters and Lottie Sutton Waters, was born Aug. 28, 1920, in Goldsboro, N.C.

Sept. 16, 1947, she was married to Hugh Tyson Westray Sr., and they enjoyed more than 60 years of happy companionship before Hugh's death in 2008.

Margery and Hugh moved from Goldsboro to Chapel Hill in 1960, and Margery was employed at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital department of radiology from 1961 until her retirement in 1984.

She was an enthusiastic supporter of the University of North Carolina athletics, and a faithful member of the University United Methodist Church. University United Methodist Church was a central part of Margery's life. She was a longtime, highly active member of the University United Methodist Women and, until very recently, assisted in the production of the Chapel Chimes newsletter.

Margery is survived by her son, Hugh Tyson "Ty" Westray Jr. of Chapel Hill; granddaughter Emily Westray of Pensacola, Fla.; son, Mark Sutton Westray and daughter-in-law, Gloria Westray of Cary, N.C.; and grandchildren, Alexander Westray of Charlotte, N.C., and Caroline Westray of Cornelius, N.C.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh Westray, and sisters, Ernestine Smith and Jane Rippe.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill at 2 p.m., with visitation to follow in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made to the University of North Carolina Hospice, University United Methodist Church or the benefit of choice.
