Bessie "Grace" Newcomb Johnson passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center with her daughter and family by her side.

A service celebrating Grace's life will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael L. Lewis officiating. Interment will be Sunday at 4 p.m. in Princeton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of Darryl and Phyllis Johnson, 305 W. Ham St., Pikeville.

Grace was born in Goldsboro on Daisy Street to the late Jasper and Bessie Newcomb.

She worked in retail and factory production for many years.

Grace was also a homemaker, mother and caretaker to her mother and husband until their passing.

She is survived by her sons, Dean Manuel Lynn, Richard Michael Lee Johnson and wife, Lynn, and Darryl William Johnson and wife, Phyllis; daughter, Cheryl Grace Johnson Anders and husband, James; four adopted children, Richard Michael Westbrook of Pikeville, Darryl Wayne Westbrook and wife, Charisse of Hawaii, Heather Virginia Johnson of Pikeville and Rose Mary Johnson of Pikeville; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her brother, Fred Newcomb and his wife, Myrtle, of Goldsboro; very special friends, Diane and Doug Jones; lifelong friend, Mary Dew of Tarboro; and many nieces and nephews she loved so dearly.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Richard William Johnson; sisters, Dorothy Golden, Josephine Allen, Juanita Hunter, Mary Ellen Goodman, Hilda Goff, Dot Robbins and Mary Louise Goodman; brothers, Cecil Newcomb, Emmett Newcomb and Henry Newcomb.

Mema's great love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will never be forgotten. She was always willing to go the extra mile. Mema will never be forgotten, and will forever be in our hearts and minds.
