SHELTON RHODES

Shelton Rhodes, 91, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Shelton was born in Onslow County Sept. 23, 1923, to the late Ashton Levi Rhodes and Lula Mae Cottle Rhodes.

He retired from the agriculture marketing service tobacco division of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Shelton lived a life of dedication to his family and friends and to his community.

He served his community many ways, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Masonic Lodge No. 304 A.F. and A.M.

Shelton was also a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro.

A service celebrating Shelton's life will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joseph Leonard officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston, N.C.

Shelton is survived by his wife, Nina Lancaster Rhodes; son, Shelton Rhodes Jr. and wife, Jo Frances, of Moss Hill; daughter, Gail Nowell and husband, Jim, of Raleigh; stepchildren, Beverly Pedraza and husband, Hector, of Goldsboro and John Webber and wife, Elaine, of Goldsboro; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Shelton was preceded in death by his son, Russell Harper Rhodes; grandson, Isaac Ashton Rhodes; wife, Fannie Harper Rhodes; son-in-law, Chris Schlaeppi; sisters, Ethel Wiggins and Dorothy Harper; and brothers, Eldon Rhodes and Raeford Rhodes.

The family will receive friends Sunday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.
