HUGH T. HOWARD

Oct. 17, 1923-Sept. 6, 2014

Retired United States Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Hugh Thomas Howard, Pikevillle, passed away Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

Hugh was born in Davie County Oct. 17, 1923, to the late Albert and Hettie Mae Sofley Howard. He was married to the late Opal Lucille Howard, who preceded him in death on the same day 21 years ago.

Hugh proudly served his country in the United States Air Force retiring as a chief master sergeant after 30 years of service. His service to our country included being a prisoner of war.

Hugh also served as the North Carolina state commander for POWs.

He lived a life of dedication to his family and friends and to his community by serving as a town commissioner for Pikeville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Barry Stallings officiating. Interment will follow in Pikeville Cemetery with military honors.

Hugh is survived by his daughter, Beverly Tripp; grandchildren, Ruth Wilson, John Sheets, Sherry Crocker and Joann Howell and husband, Ronnie; great-grandchildren, Jed Crocker, Wayland Hoggard and Dakota J. Sheets; great-great-grandson, Jesse James Crocker; and sister, Verna Dunn.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine Pilcher, and brother, Glenn Howard.

The family will receive friends Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
