Died July 23, 2014

Alma McIntyre Newby transitioned from labor to reward Wednesday July 23, 2014, at A.G. Rhodes Nursing Home in Atlanta, Ga.

She was the daughter of the late Hubert and Mabel McIntyre of Goldsboro, N.C., and the widow of the late Archie Newby Sr.

A celebration of her life and legacy will be held Monday, July 28, 2014, at noon at Mount Lebanon AME Church in Elizabeth City, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Newby attended public schools in Goldsboro. After graduation, she enrolled at North Carolina College for Negroes, which is known today as North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., where she will be remembered as a "Golden Eagle."

After graduating from North Carolina Central University, she moved to Elizabeth City and began her career in higher education administration at Elizabeth City State University, where she retired after 39 years as the director of financial aid services.

Mrs. Newby was a member of St. James AME Zion Church in Elizabeth City, her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., The Links Inc., Junior Matrons and several other civic and service organizations.

She held several leadership positions in each of those organizations.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Alison Newby Taylor of Grayson, Ga.; a son, George P.A. Newby Jr. and his wife, Bonita, of Spartanburg, S.C.; two grandsons, Jonathan Alan of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Joshua Michael of Spartanburg; and a host of nephews, nieces; many other relatives and friends.
