Jerry Richard Smith, 73, Goldsboro, passed away Friday, July 25, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.
Jerry was born in Tahlequah, Okla., Jan. 18, 1941, to the late Ruby and Jeff Smith.
After graduating in 1963 from Northeastern State University, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years of service with the rank of major.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at St. Michael's Catholic Church at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, with Father Gaston Nsongolo presiding.
The family will greet friends following the service in the chapel annex.
Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia Neverett Smith; his children, Michele and husband, Jeffrey Johnson, and four grandchildren, Carlton, Nikolaus, Lauren and Rebekah, of Garner; Christopher and wife, Monica, of Alpharetta, Ga.; Kevin and wife, Shannon, and two grandchildren, Brandon and Cameron, of Ayden; and his brother, Benny Smith of Tahlequah, Okla.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society for melanoma research, Kitty Askins Hospice Center or the charity of choice.
