PEGGY HILL EDWARDS MITCHELL

Jan. 8, 1933-Dec. 20, 2013

NEW BERN -- Peggy Hill Edwards Mitchell, 80, died Friday, Dec. 20, at her home.

Originally from Goldsboro, N.C., Mrs. Mitchell had been a resident of New Bern since 1953.

She was born Jan. 8, 1933, to the late Herbert and Katie Hill.

She is survived by her daughters, Charlene Edwards Goes and Lynne Edwards Scott of New Bern; son-in-law, Ray Scott of New Bern; grandson, Benjamin Scott of New Bern; granddaughter, Jessica Sawyer of Raleigh; brother, Robert Hill and sister-in-law, Lynda Hill, of Goldsboro; brother, Herbert Hill Jr. of Goldsboro; several nieces and nephews and their spouses; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Thomas Hill.

Mrs. Mitchell served as manager of Craven-Jones-Pamlico Senior Center for 20 years.

A lifelong musician, she was well known for her extraordinary piano playing talent, and her greatest joy, other than her family, was sharing her love of music with the public. Over the years, she entertained professionally at Fairfield Harbour, Bridgepointe Hotel and Marina, The Oar House and Attitudes at River Bend.

She was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church, but stepped in when needed, and had served as pianist and choir director for Highland Park Christian Church for the last 16 years. She entertained residents, and led sing-a-longs regularly at Courtyards at Berne Village, Homeplace and Sterling House.

Mrs. Mitchell was active in community theater for almost 40 years. She served as president, vice-president and production board chairman on the boards for both New Bern Civic Theatre and Rivertowne Repertory Players.

She was a lifetime member of New Bern Civic Theatre. Though she appeared on the stage several times, she preferred to serve behind the scenes in publicity, ticket sales or in whatever capacity she was needed.

Giving of herself to others all of her life, she was a bright light to everyone. Her warm hugs, big smile and loving heart will be sorely missed by her family and all those who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in New Bern Sunday, Jan. 5, at 4 p.m.

Immediately after the service, the family will receive friends at a reception to be held in the church fellowship hall.

Memorial donations may be made to Craven County Home Health Hospice or Highland Park Christian Church.

Online condolences may be made to the Mitchell family at www.cottenfuneralhome.com.

Arrangements are being made by Cotten Funeral Home.
