SEVEN SPRINGS -- Evelyn Earl Peterson (Kornegay) Mewborn, 74, born Dec. 12, 1938, a strong believer, went home to be with her Lord and savior Jesus Christ Saturday evening, Dec. 7, 2013, surrounded by her husband, Robert, and their families.

A graduate of Peace College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she was one of the first female licensed real estate contractors in North Carolina, and started her own construction and real estate business, but her first love was teaching.

When she retired from Southern Wayne High School, she was teaching English as a second language (ESL) and Spanish.

Evelyn loved studying the Bible and being an active member of Jackson Heights Original Free Will Baptist Church.

She enjoyed traveling, bridge, tennis, growing flowers and collecting items to decorate her warm home for family and friends to enjoy.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Lee Buffalo Peterson and Theodore Ezzell Peterson Sr., and sister, Mary Jane.

Evelyn leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband, Robert Allen Mewborn; three children, daughter, Stephanie Kornegay and partner, Tiffany Anselment, son, Russ Kornegay and wife, Susie, and Kevin Kornegay and wife, Cary; five grandchildren, McKinsey and George Kornegay IV, Charlotte, Parker and Annabel Kornegay; two stepsons, Robbie Mewborn and wife, Jan, and Chris Mewborn and wife, Beth; four stepgrandchildren, Josh and Katie Mewborn, Crystal Modlin and husband, Justin, and Heather Tolar and seven stepgrandchildren, Tyler, Landon and Trinity Modlin and Melanie, Joey, Abbygayle and Dylan Toler.

She also leaves her brother, Ted Peterson Jr., and wife, Barbara; her best friend and honorary sister, Elaine Sutton and her husband, Brent; and the father of her children, George R. Kornegay Jr., and his wife, Barbara.

Evelyn was also blessed to have sisters-in-law, Darlene Mewborn and Evelyn Hardee, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family will be Tuesday, Dec. 10, from noon to 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. The Reverend Ashley Summerlin will bring the service of remembrance at 2 p.m. in the chapel. A private interment will be at Daly's Chapel Original Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in Seven Springs.

The family will also receive guests at the home of Kevin and Cary Kornegay, 107 Birchwood Drive, Mount Olive, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
