Mabel Jernigan Cox, 91, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

Mabel was born in Wayne County May 31, 1922, to the late Rufus and Marybelle Creel Jernigan.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, William G. Cox, who preceded her in death June 19, 2010.

Mabel was a member of Falling Creek United Methodist Church.

She was devoted to her church, and was involved in many activities, where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God. The life she lived, one of grace and Christian love, could not be diminished by the declining health she endured. Her sweet smile and gentle ways will be remembered by everyone who knew her.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall of Falling Creek United Methodist Church, followed by a service celebrating Mabel's life at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary, with the Rev. Greg Moser officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mabel is survived by her son, Jimmy Cox and wife, Judy, of Goldsboro; her granddaughters, Jennifer Rall and husband, Todd, of Garner and Julie Bruce and husband, Steven, of Raleigh; her great-grandchildren, James Rall and Taylor Bruce; and her sister, Mildred C. Sutton of Calypso.

She is also survived by many special people, including her nieces, lady friends, caregivers and her housekeeper.

With loving gratitude, the family would like to thank each of you for the love and support you showed Mabel during her declining health.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Grace Tart Harrell and Inez Harrell; brother, Gordon Rufus Jernigan; grandson, Matthew Cox; and great-granddaughter, Marley Bruce.
