FRED L. SHELBY

Sept. 3, 1932-Aug. 30, 2013

Fred Louis Shelby, 80, passed away on Friday, Aug. 30, after a brief illness at his home surrounded by his family.

Fred was born on Sept. 3, 1932, in Wayne County to the late Thomas Albert Shelby and Jean Rabil Shelby.

He had one true love in his life, Norma, whom he met at an early age. More than anything else, Fred was devoted to his wife until her death on July 6, 2009. Together, they owned and operated Norma's Dress Shop in Goldsboro and The Ladies Shoppe in Downtown Goldsboro. Following Norma's death, Fred continued to operate the Dress Shop and was very instrumental in the daily operations until his death. Fred was a caring, loving parent and grandparent whose primary goal was the happiness and security of his family. He had a huge heart, always giving and reaching out to others. There wasn't a stranger he hadn't met.

Fred's passion was golf. If it was a beautiful day, he enjoyed being on the links sharing shots and laughter with his friends. He also enjoyed spending time at Wrightsville Beach with his family.

Graveside services will be held at the family plot on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m. in Willow Dale Cemetery, with the Rev. Joseph Leonard officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

Fred is survived by his son, Tom Shelby, and wife, Sherry, of Goldsboro; daughter, Nicole Shelby Roche and husband, Greg, of Wilmington; and two grandchildren, John Parker Roche and Shelby Elizabeth Roche.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 1000 N. Jefferson Ave., Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
