Howard Sherrod, 80, died Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Howard was born in Central City, Ky., May 16, 1933, to the late Roy Franklin Sherrod Sr. and Jessie Norris Sherrod.

A Vietnam veteran, he served his country for 24 years in the United States Air Force.

Howard was the manager of Round-A-Bout Skating Center for several years. After leaving the skating center, he worked 24 years Civil Service at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Howard lived a life of dedication to his family and friends, and was truly loved by all. He will be greatly missed.

A memorial service with military honors will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with pastor Tim Sharp officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Howard is survived by his wife, Jill Sherrod; his daughter, Carla S. Sutherland of Goldsboro; his son, Steven W. Sherrod and wife, Alma, of Goldsboro; his brother, Roy Sherrod of Central City, Ky.; and his granddaughters, Lindsey Sherrod Miranda, Mindy L. Sherrod and Tara Leigh Sutherland.

He is also survived by his nephew, Frank Sherrod of Central City, Ky., and his nieces, Lana Hoskins of Central City, Ky., and Jackie Ladd of Central City, Ky.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.
