The Rev. Dr. Isaac Baynes Horton II, 84, 802 Poplar Street, Goldsboro, N.C., peacefully passed away at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro Saturday, April 20, 2013, following an extended illness.

He was born in Raleigh June 4, 1928, and was the third of five children born to the late Rev. Avery and Leasie Dunn Horton.

He was a graduate of Wake County public schools. He then earned the A.B. degree from Shaw University in 1955 and the B.D. degree from Shaw Divinity School in 1958. He also earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest in 1979. He also received and was granted numerous certificates and honorary degrees.

He was twice married, first to Thelma Lea Compton Horton, who preceded him in death April 22, 1993, and to this union six children were born. His second marriage was to Burna Moore Horton formerly of Wilmington, who survives.

Dr. Horton, former pastor of First African Baptist Church, leaves to cherish the memory of his life his wife, Burna Moore Horton of Goldsboro; six children, Dr. Isaac Byron Horton III of Raleigh, Thelma Linette Horton of Chapel Hill, Bernardeane Horton Moton of Statesville, Bernardette Horton Davis of Durham, Esther Horton McCloud of Bristow, Va., and Joseph S. Horton of Richmond, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Thea Bryant Horton of Raleigh; sons-in-law, retired Lt. Col. Charles Jay McCloud Jr. of Bristow, Va., J. David Moton Sr. of Statesville and Christopher Davis of Creedmoor; a daughter-in-law-to-be, Jean'Yea Webb Daniels of Richmond, Va.; a former daughter-in-law, Jeanne Mask Horton of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren, James David Moton Jr., Matthew Bernard Moton and Isaac Brennan Horton IV all of Raleigh, Kanisha Latoya Fogg of Greensboro, Maya Horton of San Francisco, Calif., Crystal Malea Davis of Winston-Salem, Byron Bryant Horton of Raleigh, Alexis Taylor Davis of Durham, Kimberlea Linette McCloud of Bristow, Va., Leah Baynes Horton of Raleigh and Charles Jay "C. Jay" McCloud of Bristow, Va.; two sisters, Paltine (Johnny) Jowers of Baltimore, Md., and Annie Horton Martin of Raleigh; and other relatives, numerous church families and friends.

Celebration of lfe services will be conducted Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St., Goldsboro, N.C. The Rev. Dr. Louis S. Leigh Jr. will officiate. The interment services will be held at Carolina Biblical Gardens, 1530 Creech Road, Garner, N.C., 27529.

Dr. Horton will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home in Statesville until taken to Haskins Funeral Home in Goldsboro.

Dr. Horton will lie in state for public viewing from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday in the sanctuary of First African Baptist Church, with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
