Died April 22, 2013

Mr. Lyman Royce Gray, 91, died Monday evening, April 22, 2013.

A native of the Arba community of Greene County, he was born the son of the late Roland W. and Verner Edwards Gray.

Following graduation from Snow Hill High School, he attended Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, in Wilson, N.C.

A veteran of the United States Army, he served three years during World War II with the 45th Infantry Division in the European Theater, receiving five Bronze Stars.

For more than 40 years he was co-owner of Gray Brothers Store outside of Snow Hill.

Mr. Gray was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church.

A Mason and Shriner, he was a member of Radiance Lodge No. 132 for more than 60 years, and participated in many ceremonies of the final rites of brother Masons.

He was also a member of Wayne County Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Shriners and Woodmen of the World.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Gray, and sister, Verner Mae Gray Sutton.

Mr. Gray is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Rebecca Moye Gray.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill, with the Rev. Robert Fulkerson and the Rev. Leon Grubbs officiating. Interment will follow at Snow Hill Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
