PIKEVILLE -- George Jefferson Gardner, 73, a retired farmer, died Friday morning at his home.

Born Feb. 23, 1940, in Wayne County to the late Theodore "Thedie" and Nina Pate Gardner, he was preceded in death by brothers, James "Hoss" Gardner and Thedie Gardner; and a sister, Lou Grantham.

Funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013, in Pikeville Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Jones officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The burial service will take place Monday at 11 a.m. in Pikeville Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Strickland Gardner; daughter, Lisa Lewis and husband, Dennis, of Pikeville; "adopted son," Chad Pate and wife, Tracey, of Pikeville; "adopted grandchildren," Adam Pate, Courtney Pate and Bradley Pate; sisters, Esther Lancaster and husband, J.R., of Pikeville, Grace Davis and husband, Leslie, of Pikeville, Betty Jean Corbett and husband, Donald, of Goldsboro, Arlene Gardner of Pikeville and Linda Casey and husband, Ben, of Goldsboro; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Gardner and Anna Gardner both of Goldsboro, Brenda Davis and husband, Bill, of Pikeville and Polly McCall and husband, Pete, of Newport; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Grantham of Goldsboro.

Flowers are acceptable or memorial may be made to Pikeville Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, 336 Nahunta Road, Pikeville, N.C., 27863.
