Herbert James Tanner, 83, died March 14, 2013, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. James AME Zion Church, 205 S. George St., Goldsboro. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park North.

Mr. Tanner was born in Union County June 19, 1929, to Joe Mack Tanner and Christine Elizabeth Chambers.

He attended Mecklenburg County schools, where he graduated from West Charlotte High School. He also attended Johnson C. Smith University, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Leo College.

Mr. Tanner retired as senior master sergeant from the United States Air Force in 1982 with 30 years of service. He went to work at Eastpointe Human Services as a licensed clinical addictions specialist until his retirement in 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Tanner of Goldsboro; a son, Reginald Tanner of Goldsboro; seven daughters, Henrietta Tanner of Goldsboro, Janet Hudson of Dover, Del., Rachel Tanner, Christine Spears (pastor Charles Spears) and Cynthia Raiford of Goldsboro, Pamela Hinton and Wanda Jones of Savannah, Ga.; son-in-law, Travis Barden of Dudley; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, March 18, 2013, from 2 to 6 p.m. with family present from 5 to 6 p.m. at J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Creations, 27534.
