HILDA GRAY BENSON

MIDDLESEX -- Mrs. Hilda Gray Benson, 70, 12748 N.C. 231, Middlesex, died Monday, June 18, 2012, at Wilson Medical Center.

Born Jan. 12, 1942, in Johnston County, she was the daughter of the late Percy Barden Horne and Arthie Mae Horne of Kenly.

Mrs. Benson loved to fish, and was known around Middlesex as the "fishing woman." She would do anything to help others, and she made sure everyone had fish and sweet potatoes to eat.

She loved music and played the accordion and organ.

In her earlier years, she ran the day care at church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her significant other, Danny Cleveland Lewis; three sons, Daniel Ray Benson and his wife, Shannon, of Middlesex, Danny Curtis Benson and his wife, Cathy, of Middlesex and David Lynn Benson of Bayboro; stepdaughter, Peggy Gail Brohaugh and her husband, John, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; stepson, Floyd Michael Lewis and his wife, Audrey, of Wilson; brothers, James Percy "Shorty" Horne of Middlesex, Michael Troy Horne of Kenly, Joseph Horne of Zebulon, Tommy Horne of Austin, Texas, Donnell Horne of Zebulon and Timothy Dale Horne of Wilson; sisters, Elsie Mae Massey of Zebulon, Gladys Faye Deans Murray of Kenly, Lucille Sullivan of Kenly, Thelma Jane Davis of Kenly, Linda Lou Rogers of Kenly, Rose Marie Horne of Kenly and Judy Carol Horne of Zebulon; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Benson was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Sasser Benson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012, at Mount Zion Original Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Wagnon will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Minshew-Coley Funeral Home in Kenly.
