JOAN RUSSELL PILCHER

Aug. 20, 1937-March 24, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. -- Joan Russell Pilcher went to be with her Lord March 24, 2012.

She was born Aug. 20, 1937, to Dr. Oneal Russell and Louise Hancock Russell in Annapolis, Md.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Basil (Frank); grandchildren, Scott and Marie Basil; her brother, Dr. Oneal F. Russell Jr. (Maria); nephews, Oneal F. Russell III (Jessica) and Joseph M. Russell; and great-niece, Tessa Russell.

Joan lived in Goldsboro for 40 years, moving to Richmond, Va., in 2000 to be near her daughter.

Joan worked for the Goldsboro City Schools, first as a bookkeeper and then as a reading teacher.

She earned her Bachelor of Science and MSHE degrees from East Carolina University, and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Upsilon Omicron and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies while at the university.

Joan was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and its Discussion Sunday school class.

She loved to teach Sunday school, loved her family, was an avid reader, enjoyed taking pictures and was a collector of special quotes and sayings, turning them into memorable notebooks.

Her kind heart and gentile spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of her life will take place April 14, 2012, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Glen Allen, Va., at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church in Goldsboro or Shady Grove United Methodist Church youth ministries in Glen Allen, Va.
