KAREN STUART GIBSON ASBURY

FAYETTEVILLE -- Karen Stuart Gibson Asbury, 64, Fayetteville, died Saturday, March 24, 2012, in Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center.

A memorial service was held this morning, March 27, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Haymount United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Gira and the Rev. Woody Wells officiating.

The family received friends Monday afternoon from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home.

Mrs. Asbury was born Nov. 23, 1947, to the late Stuart Trigg and Nancy Smith Gibson in Pulaski, Va.

Karen taught public school in Virginia and North Carolina for a total of 37 years, including 25 years with Cumberland County Schools. She ended her career at Terry Sanford High School. The last 12 years of her teaching she spent working in the academically gifted program.

Mrs. Asbury was a member of Haymount United Methodist Church, and an active member of The Word Sunday school class. Also, she worked as a sixth-grade mentor for confirmation.

Additionally, she worked in Cumberland County Guardian Ad Litem program, and volunteered for a short time with Cape Fear Valley Cancer Center before the return of her cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Alan Jennings Asbury; daughter, Alison Asbury Hurley and husband, Todd Huggins Hurley, of Fayetteville; two grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Hurley and Leighton Jennings Hurley; sister, Kathryn Lovell Roseberry and husband, Stephen Roseberry, of Charlotte; two nephews, John Lovell and wife, Anne, and Jason Lovell; and a great-aunt, Helen Smith Graham of Dublin, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of the Cancer Center, designated for Support Mammogram Screening, 101 Robeson St., Suite 106, Fayetteville, N.C., 28301, or the youth program at Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville, N.C., 28303.
