RALEIGH -- Elton Albert Fields, 91, of 2009 Ruddy Road passed away peacefully on Thursday night, Jan. 19, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 22, 2011, at 2 p.m. at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.

Albert was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Goldsboro to the late Willie Ray Fields and Ida Wiggins Fields. Albert spent his early years in Goldsboro, but moved and spent the rest of his life in the Raleigh-Durham area. Albert bravely served our country in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Albert retired from Monsanto in the 1980s and then moved from Durham to Creedmoor. Never one to sit still for too long, Albert picked his tools back up and did work during his retirement as a plumber, painter, or just anything that needed to be done. During his spare time, Albert loved to fish, hunt and paint with his many family members and friends. Sharing time with his family was a pleasure in Albert's life.

Albert was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Thelma O'Steen Fields; his daughter, Thelma Louise Fields Wilson; brothers, Ray and Raymond Fields; and sister, Loraine Dennison. Albert is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, his caretakers, Gail and Skip Casey of Raleigh; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Erma Fields of Durham; sister, Shirley Fields Creech of Goldsboro; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive guests from 1 until 2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 3712 Cheek Road, Durham, NC 27704 with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
