NATHANIEL HOWELL SR.

Nathaniel "Nate" Howell Sr. was born Jan. 5, 1945, to the late Mildred Howell-Waters. He departed this life peacefully Jan. 10, 2012, at his home.

At an early age, he became a member of Rockford Free Will Baptist Church located in LaGrange.

Though Nate was a man of a few words, he was cordial to everybody he came in contact with, and he was also known for his smile.

Nathaniel attended Wayne County Public Schools, and graduated from Carver High School located in Mount Olive in 1963.

He joined the United States Army in 1968. During his military career, Nate received several honors, including the Purple Heart while serving in the Vietnam War, as well as the Bronze Star.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Howell Waters, and his brother, Jonathan Howell.

He leaves to cherish his memories of his life three daughters, Casinda (Theodore) Thomas of Garner, Valerie Miles of Raleigh and Natalie Howell of Goldsboro; a son, Nathaniel Demond Howell Jr. of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Vivian Weathers, Barbara (William) Fleming, Almenter "Ment" (Edward) Coley and Verline (Reginald) McLaurin of Goldsboro; a brother, Richard (Janice) Howell of Goldsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will be receiving friends at 204 S. Douglas St., Goldsboro.

A visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, from 3 to 6 p.m. at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, 401 N. William St., Goldsboro.

A celebration of life will be held Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at 11 a.m. at New Spirit Church Ministries, 1501 N. William St., Goldsboro.

Following the services in the sanctuary, Mr. Howell's delicate temple, along with his adored family, will be escorted to Jerusalem Church Cemetery in Seven Springs for interment rites.

Mr. Howell's earthen vessel is peacefully resting at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where the Howell and connected families are receiving prestigious service.
