Mattie Christine Sutton Jernigan, 95, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Christine was born in Sampson County Aug. 6, 1916, to the late Timothy and Emma Sutton.

As a 52-year member of The Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school for 35 years and served as president of the Women's Ministries for 18 years. In 1961, she received the state Distinguished Service Woman of the Year award for her work with the Women's Ministries.

Family and friends will miss her great outlook on life and her beautiful sense of humor. She was a woman who always found joy in life and the good in everyone.

Christine will always be remembered for her poetry, her songs and her jokes. She was a model for us all.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at 2 p.m. at The Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1000 E. Ash St., Goldsboro. The Rev. Ronnie Heath will officiate. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Christine is survived by her daughter and husband, Dene and Michael Reich of Chapel Hill; her son and wife, Randall and Helen Jernigan of Goldsboro; and their children, Hannah and Kent.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Willie Lewis Jernigan. Also preceding her in death were her three sisters, Gertrude Sutton, Mildred Sutton and Agnes Steele Wilson, and her brother, Craven Sutton.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
