WILLIAM RAY 'RAY BOAT' SAULS

Oct. 20, 1950-Oct. 28, 2011

William Ray "Ray Boat" Sauls was born Oct. 20, 1950, and departed this life Oct. 28, 2011, at the Veterans Medical Center.

He received his early education from Wayne County Public Schools.

He enlisted in the United States Army, and worked at the 58th Combat Engineer Co. at Fort Jackson, S.C. He held many primary specialty title combat engineer.

His last overseas service was in Germany, and he was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. He received an honorable discharge from the Army as a Vietnam Veteran.

After returning from the Armed Services, he worked at ACME for 10 years, then as a certified public accountant at Fremont Nursing Home for several years. He worked at Standard Commercial Tobacco Factory and Alliance as a general laborer until his death.

He was a proud member of Hooks Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Pikeville. He served as the assistant superintendent and present superintendent of Sunday school until his passing. He served as a member of the gospel, mass and senior choirs, a trustee, an advocate of the Children Annual Outings and as an advocate of the Norwayne Alumni.

William is preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Louise Sauls, and a brother, Larry Sauls.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory four sisters, Miss Mary Louise Sauls of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Annie D. "Lois" (Steven) Artis of Pikeville, Mrs. Evelyn S. (Steven) Ellis of Raleigh and Mrs. Teresa L. (Don) Waston of Warner-Robins, Ga.; a devoted niece, Mrs. Shirley Ann (Eric) Harrington of Dunbar, Md.; two special little nieces, Donnicia and Calista Ellis of Raleigh; three nephews, Charles Sauls of Pikeville, Jamica Sauls of Pikeville and Don Watson Jr. of Warner-Robins, Ga.; three great-nephews, Christopher Hill of Goldsboro, Eric Harrington Jr. of Dunbar, Md., and Mohlik of Maryland; a great-niece, Myosea of Maryland; two close and dear friends, Larry Jones and Andrew Bunch; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. at E. M. Matthews Funeral Home.

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Hooks Grove Baptist Church, 290 Hooks Grove Church Road NW, Pikeville.

Following the services in the sanctuary, Mr. Sauls' delicate temple, along with his adored family, will be escorted to Hooks Grove Baptist Church Cemetery for interment rites.

Mr. Sauls' earthen vessel is peacefully resting at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where the Sauls and connected families are receiving prestigious service.
