Herman J. Pate, 88, of Goldsboro, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday. He was a resident at Mary Gran Nursing Center in Clinton, N.C.

Herman was born Sept. 27, 1922 and grew up on Patetown Road.

His wife of 63 years, Dollie Mozingo Pate, preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 2004.

A loving father of five sons, Herman was a man of God.

He first attended Second Baptist Church. Herman served as deacon for Bible Baptist Church for two years. He also served as deacon for Grace Baptist Church for 15 years and Freedom Baptist Church for 13 years.

Herman's ministry was not limited to the church, however, as many lives were led to Christ through his testimony.

Herman graduated from Goldsboro High School and was a key member of the men's swim team that accumulated many honors during his tenure there.

Herman owned and operated Pate's Exxon on William Street for over 35 years. He employed his sons over the years at the service station and became known as a proficient mechanic that maintained the highest level of trust and honesty. His son, Keith Pate, remained with Herman throughout the remainder of his career and together they established Pate's Auto Service on Vine Street, which is still in operation today.

He is survived by four sons, Richard Pate and Keith Pate of Goldsboro, N.C., Gary Pate and his wife, Sherry, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Greg Pate and his wife, Hope, of Jacksonville, Fla.; his sister, Alice Watkins and her husband, Curtis, of Newton Grove, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Amie Ansama and husband, Jerry, Grafton, Va.; five grandsons, Allen Pate and wife Shannon of Virginia, Michael Pate and wife, Amy, of Fayetteville, N.C., Logan Pate of Chapel Hill, N.C., Dylan Pate and Dawson Pate of Jacksonville, Fla.; two granddaughters, Nicole Pate and Kimberly Pate of Goldsboro, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Herman was preceded in death by his brother Claxton, his sister, Esther, and his oldest son, Jarvis.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
