WALTER LONNIE SANDERS

Walter Lonnie Sanders Sr., 90, Goldsboro, was born in Johnston County, N.C., Sept. 19, 1920, to the late Lonnie and Arkannie Sanders. He was the seventh of 13 children. He quietly departed this life at Wayne Memorial Hospital July 27, 2011.

As a youth and young adult, he was an active member of Green Hill Baptist Church in Johnston County, N.C., for more than 30 years.

He attended Johnston County Training School in Smithfield, N.C.

He was a humble man, full of wisdom, and the CEO of the Sanders family reunion and the patriarch of the family.

He was married to the former Eva Mae Williams, E-Wee as he affectionately called her, for 56 years.

He retired from Cherry Hospital after 30 years of dedicated service.

He was a faithful member of C.S. Brown Lodge No. 782 in Goldsboro, N.C.

He was a faithful member of Goldsboro Chapel Church, where he was a faithful member until his health failed.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Eva Mae; eight children, Walter (TaKeisha) Sanders Jr. of Goldsboro, N.C., Shelton Wooten, Warren Wooten of Washington, D.C., Peggy Hines of Baltimore, Md., Thelma Frost of Hyattsville, Md., Alice (Franklyn) Wooten-Johnson, LaVonda Sanders and Lavora Coley all of Goldsboro, N.C.; a brother, Jacob (Willie Mae) Sanders of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Eula Brooks of Durham, N.C., and Jean Alston of Philadelphia, Pa.; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A service of remembrance will be held Sunday at noon at Goldsboro Chapel Church.

A viewing will take place one hour prior to the service. Following the services in the sanctuary, Mr. Sanders' delicate temple, along with his adored family, will be escorted to Wayne Memorial Park for interment rites.

Mr. Sanders is peacefully resting from labor at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where his family is receiving prestigious service.
