DORIS G. THORNTON

Feb. 17, 1924-July 6, 2011

Emma Doris Graham Thornton, 87, 312 Corbett Hill Road, died Wednesday at Wake Medical Center.

She was born in Johnston County to the late Junious H. and Pennie Graham, and was married to the late John William Thornton.

A graduate of Grantham High School, she also graduated from Hank Hanna College of Beauty in Goldsboro.

Doris was an active member of Eureka Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, and was a member of the adult choir.

She was also a former member of Grantham Grange and Woodmen of the World.

A beautician for 61 years, she operated her own beauty shop until her death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Eureka Christian Church, with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will be receiving friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the home.

Mrs. Thornton is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Stanley Thornton of Grantham and J. Dixon and Tammy Thornton of Kenly; a daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Thomas Fowler of Grantham; a special daughter and son-in-law, LaDean and James Wade of Goldsboro; a brother, Donald R. Graham of Grantham; a grandson, Scotty and Wendy Thornton; a special grandson, Gary Davenport; two great-grandchildren, Casey and Hope Thornton; and various nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Danny Wade Thornton; eight brothers, Nelson W. Graham, Edwin Graham, Thurman, Graham, Jesse Graham, Dock, Graham, Junious H. Graham Jr., Kenneth Earl Graham and Dan Marvin Graham; and a sister, Lela Thornton.
