MOUNT OLIVE -- Basser Ray Best, 67, lovingly known by his family and friends as "Ray," 535 Stanley Church Road, Mount Olive, N.C., departed this life, peacefully Monday, July 4, 2011, at his residence.

Ray was born Jan. 3, 1944, to the late Kizzie Newkirk Best and Calvin Best.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Calvin Jr., Harvey Lee, Alma, Essie Mae, Van, Annie Laura, Wilbert, Edna and Leonard.

Mr. Best attended church at North East and Stanley Chapel Church in Mount Olive, N.C.

Ray's hobbies included the collection of irons, rings, cans, radios, watches and especially, one dollar bills.

Funeral service will be conducted Sunday, July 10, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Stanley Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 687 Stanley Chapel Road, Mount Olive, N.C., with Dr. Kennie Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Carver Memorial Park Cemetery, 228 Breazeale Ave., Mount Olive, N.C.

A public viewing will be held Saturday, July 9, 2011, at McIntyre Funeral Home and Florist, 401 S. Center St., Mount Olive, N.C., from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. to receive friends and other family members.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories the baby of the family, Linda Sutton and husband, James, of New York, N.Y., who greatly took care of him; his siblings' children, Alexandra Basquiat and husband, Lou, and Acquanetta Sutton all of New York, N.Y., Frank Bowden and wife, Rene, of Dudley, N.C., Judy Bowden of Goldsboro, N.C., David Bowden and wife, Joyce, of Philadelphia, Pa., Jacquelina Hale and husband, Don, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Alice Worthy of Philadelphia, Pa.; four caregivers, Vera Hair, Doretha Thompson, Lesley Holmes and James Allen; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at 535 Stanley Church Road, Mount Olive, N.C., where it will also assemble one hour prior to the funeral in preparation for the funeral procession.
