Retired Wayne County principal David Rogers Sr. died Friday, July 2, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C.

Born April 10, 1939, in Bunn, N.C., he was the son of the late Luther S. and Martha Rogers.

He served for 34 years in the Wayne County Public Schools, where he retired as principal of Eastern Wayne Elementary School in 1994. Nine years after retiring from Eastern Wayne Elementary School, he served as interim assistant principal at Green Central High School in Snow Hill, Charles B. Aycock High School, Brogden Junior High, Grantham School and Spring Creek Elementary.

He was a graduate of Kittrell Junior College, Elizabeth City State University and East Carolina University, where he obtained an M.A. in education administration and a degree as an educational specialist.

Additionally, he served as captain for the 2009 and 2010 First African Baptist Church's Relay for Life team; on local boards that included Goldsboro Parks and Recreation, Wayne County Mental Health Association and Neuse Correction Center; Wayne County Social Services; and a judge of Precinct 19.

Rogers was an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and was recently honored as Man of the Year for the fraternity's local affiliate, the Theta Omicron Lambda Chapter of Goldsboro.

He was an active member of First African Baptist church, where he has served as a deacon for the past 27 years.

Additionally, he served as chairman of the deacon ministry, coordinator of Christian Education Ministry, a member of the male chorus, a member of the laymen's ministry, chairperson of the search committee, new members committee chairperson, transportation committee chairperson, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, homecoming chairperson and coordinator of the afterschool tutorial activities.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 43 years, Shirley Gatling Rogers; a daughter, Sherry Daynell Rogers of Raleigh; a son, David Rogers Jr. (Chaundra) of Greensboro; two grandsons, Bryson David Rogers of Raleigh and David Rogers III "Trey" of Greensboro; a brother, Henry (Gloria) Rogers of Bunn; two sisters, Roberta (John) Purcell of Knightdale and Dorethea (Moses) Burrell of Raleigh; sisters- in- law, Alice B. Rogers of Bunn and Thelma Davis Rogers of Capitol Heights, Md.; an uncle, Roland A. Parker "Buddy" of Baltimore, Md.; two aunts, Mary V. High of Dumphries, Va., and Liza Rogers of Bunn; a father-in-law, James E. Gatling of Como; sisters-in-law, Mable Gatling of Como, Olivia (James) Worthington of Como, Elsie G. Parker of Murfreesboro, Eva (Oliver) Newman of Suitland, Md., and Dorothy (Collin) Sneed of Murfreesboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A public viewing will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2011, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, N.C. A memorial celebration will be held at 6 p.m. at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St.

A final viewing will be held Wednesday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday July 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Bear Creek Association Headquarters, 1800 Slocumb St., Goldsboro, N.C., with the Rev. Dr. Louis Leigh officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park South Cemetery, U.S. 117 South, Dudley, N.C.
