NORWOOD "CUB" THORNTON

FAISON -- Norwood "Cub" Thornton, 71, a native of Faison, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011.

The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive Tuesday, Jan. 4 (which would have been Mr. Thornton's 72nd birthday), beginning at 1 p.m., with services to follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Paul Rose officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Thornton, a native of Faison who was reared on a family farm, was retired from Georgia Pacific. Prior to his employment with Georgia Pacific, he had been employed with Cones Mill in Greensboro.

For the last three years, he had been a resident-patient at Mount Olive Care and Rehabilitation Center, and prior to that, he resided for 22 years at Windam Hall in Kenansville.

He is survived by his siblings, Paul Haney and Ellen Bearden both of Reidsville, Eugene Thornton and Jerry Thornton both of Greensboro, Virginia Cosgrove of Mount Olive, Mildred Wilson of Indiana and Betty Whaley of Chinquapin; along with a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Felix and Clyde Horne Thornton, and several siblings, Percy Clayton Haney, John Henry Thornton, Charlie Thornton, Lonnie Thornton, Lela Ezzell, Emma Williams and Evelyn Compton.
