Dr. Clyde Atkinson Erwin Jr., passed away peacefully Wednesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Born June 4, 1929, in Rutherfordton County, he was the son of the late Dr. Clyde Atkinson Erwin Sr. and Evelyn Miller Erwin.

Dr. Erwin graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, and was a 1951 graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and in 1960 with a master's degree in agricultural education.

He was a member of Sigma Chi, Kappa Phi Kappa, Scabbard and Blade and North Carolina State University Monogram Club.

He did graduate work at the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before receiving his doctorate degree in adult and community college education from North Carolina State University in 1975.

Dr. Erwin was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, and he served his country proudly as a lieutenant in the United States Army.

Dr. Erwin served as president of Wayne Community College from 1966 until 1986.

He was executive secretary of the North Carolina State School Boards Association, a Teaching Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and assistant superintendent of Fairfax County School in Fairfax, Va.

Dr. Erwin served as a legislative consultant for the National Education Association in Washington, D.C. and the North Carolina Education Association, Raleigh, N.C. He was a vocational agriculture teacher in Kernersville, N.C. and in Hillsborough, N.C.

He did consulting work at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, Va.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wayne Memorial Park, with Dr. Billy Seate officiating. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Erwin will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with Dr. Billy Seate officiating.

Surviving is his wife, Emily Castelloe Erwin; daughters, Cindy Erwin Keller and husband, John, of Norfolk, Va., Cheri Erwin Williford and husband, Lyn, of Goldsboro and Stacy Erwin Blahove and husband, Mark, of Savannah, Ga.; sister, Frances Erwin Withers of Annandale, Va.; grandchildren, Cassi Keller Gardiner and husband, Ryan, Maria Blahove, Alex Williford and Joshua and Jenni Erwin; great-grandchildren, Scott and Jamie Gardiner; and niece, Lyn Withers.

Dr. Erwin was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a son, Clyde A. "Chip" Erwin III.

The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and also in the church parlor following the memorial service at the church.
