LUTHER OSBORNE "OZ" BARTLETT JR.

Luther Osborne "Oz" Bartlett Jr., 83, of Goldsboro passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, surrounded by his loving family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Mr. Bartlett was born in Wayne County June 23, 1927, and was a lifelong resident of Wayne County.
He was the son of Luther "Luke" and Janie Bartlett.
He was a faithful member of First Christian Church.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and retired in 1969 as a master sergeant from the National Guard with 22 years of service.
Oz was known for 60 years throughout North Carolina for his craftsmanship and quality work in his masonry business. Many fine young men learned a strong work ethic from spending summers working with Oz.
He continued his "hobby" of building brick fences and patios for friends and neighbors until his late 70s.
He was known throughout his life as a kind and gentle man, loving father and husband. He had many friends, and was loved by all.
Oz Bartlett married Carolyn Lassiter July 28, 1951, and they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary prior to her passing Aug. 1, 2005.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Fred Clarke officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service, and other times at the home of his son and daughter-in-law -- his former home. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wayne Memorial Park.
Mr. Bartlett was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son, Timothy Carl Bartlett in 1998; and his sister, Hester Bartlett Jackson.
He is survived by his son, Gary Osborne and his wife, Mary, of Goldsboro; his daughter, Lynn Bartlett Bonti and her husband, Paul, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; grandchildren, Will Bartlett, Brian Bonti, Gregg Bonti, Karyn Schock and Julia Sherwood; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Newton Bartlett of Goldsboro, his sisters, Janie Yates-Glandorf of Iowa City, Iowa, Helen Godwin of Goldsboro and Sybil Sasser of Warrenton, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center all for its compassionate care for Mr. Bartlett and his family.
