Ray Benton Mooring, 69, passed away Tuesday morning at home following more than a seven-year courageous battle with cancer.

Ray was born in Wayne County Nov. 7, 1940, to the late Ralph Lee and Maggie Wethington Mooring.

After graduating from Rosewood High School in 1959, he began his career in automobile repair, continuing on to become one of Wayne County's best auto body repair technicians, having worked most of his life with the local Buick dealerships.

He married his high school sweetheart, Doris Ellaine Smith in 1963.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1966, where he served for two years, including a year in Vietnam.

Ray is survived by his sisters, Shirley Mooring Hill and husband, Burnice Hill, Peggy Mooring Jones and husband, J.E. Jones, and Judy Mooring Jones all of Goldsboro; and his sister-in-law, Lillian Mooring of Dudley. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Bobbie Lucille Mooring, Sadie Mooring Wortham, Margie Mooring Jones; and his brother, Ralph James Mooring. He was also predeceased by his in-laws, Marvin L. and Mary Sutton Smith.

Ray was an active member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church in Rosewood.

His service will be held at the church Thursday evening, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., with pastor Vann Spivey officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Burial with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday morning at Wayne Memorial Park.

Friends will also be received at the home, 105 Holland Hill Drive in Rosewood.

Ray was an outstanding example to all who knew him. His honesty, kindness and true friendship will be cherished by all who knew him.
