Leon "Tobe" Wells, 89, 418 Rodell Barrow Road, Goldsboro, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Wells was born in Greene County June 19, 1921, to the late William Cornelius Wells and Annie Lee Ham Wells.

He graduated from Snow Hill High School in 1942, where he was a stand-out baseball player and a member of the football team.

Following high school, Mr. Wells served in World War II as a medic in the United States Army.

After serving his country, he returned home to farm.

Mr. Wells was a member of Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

He also was a member of East Wayne Fire Department.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Gladys Barrow Wells of the home; his sons, Taylor Gregg Potter of Goldsboro and Stephen L. Wells and wife, Lori, of Goldsboro; three grandchildren, Grayson Wells, Tanner Wells and Leslie Wells; a brother, Perry Wells; and a sister, Frances Wells Hill.

Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his parents, William Cornelius Wells and Annie Lee Ham Wells, brothers; Floyd Wells, Bruce Wells, Marvin Wells, William Hayward Wells, Herman Wells and Wadus Wells; and sisters; Alma Wells Wade, Etheleen Wells Kearney and Annie Dorothy Wells.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. at Free Gospel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church in Snow Hill, with pastor Terry Heath and Dr. Joe Ben Kearney officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service, and at his residence other times. Interment will be Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. in Wells Cemetery at Shine's Crossroads in Snow Hill.
