EARL EDWARD MITCHELL

June 28, 1918 - July 18, 2010

Earl Edward Mitchell, 92, died peacefully on Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center following a period of declining health.

Mr. Mitchell, the son of Floyd and Estelle Mitchell, was born in Goldsboro on June 28, 1918. He and Mary Mitchell were married July 1, 1935. He was active in church activities at the First Christian Church, where he taught Sunday school, and he was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America for many years. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army in the South Pacific. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserve.

Earl served as the Wayne County Veteran Affairs Director, the Wayne County Civil Preparedness Director, and was retired from the United States Postal Service.

Earl was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Faircloth Mitchell, and his second wife, Ellen Creech Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his brother, D.R. Mitchell of Oriental, NC; his two sons, William and wife Emmy; Fred and wife, Elizabeth; and grandchildren Brock, Sallie, Caroline, Maryanna and Collin; and great grandchildren Bo, Sarah, Lucy, Lydia and John.

A private family graveside will be held at Willow Dale Cemetery.

The Mitchell family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center and the Sterling House of Goldsboro for the loving and compassionate care they provided for Earl.
