GLENDA IRELAND MAYO
Died July 8, 2010
Glenda Ireland Mayo departed her earthly body July 8, 2010 surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband and best friend of 65 years (as of July 23, 2010), Hallett Mayo of Goldsboro, N.C.; her daughter, Olivia Mayo Hancock and her husband, Robert Hancock, of Hubert, N.C.; their daughter, Melissa Pace and her husband, Geno Pace; and great-grandchildren, Tanner Lutheran and Taylor Lutheran. She is also survived by her daughter, Annette Mayo Shaw and her husband, Conal Shaw, of Roanoke, Va.; their daughter, Catherine Marlow, her husband, Mac Marlow; and their children, Nathaniel Marlow and Olivia Marlow; as well as their son, Jonathan Shaw and his wife, Stacie Shaw. Further, she is survived by her sisters, Gladys Lee and her husband, Jack Lee, Oma Riggs; and her brother, Alton Ireland and his wife, Daisye. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Alfred Mayo and his wife, Elsie; and stepbrother-in-law Robert Gaskins and wife, Malinda.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Juanita and Guy Ireland of Alliance, N.C.; her sister, Vernell Ireland; and her brothers, Clifton and Guy Ireland Jr. She was also preceded by her beloved granddaughter and namesake, Glenda LaNell Hancock.
Glenda and Hallett met prior to World War II and she waited patiently for his return, and when he did, they married shortly thereafter.
She was a loving and kind wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. These attributes flowed over into every aspect of her life.
She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and Women's Circle of the same church, the Coastal Plain Chapter American ex-Prisoners of War and a local bridge club, and she volunteered to work with handicapped children for a number of years.
She kept a clean heart, clean mind and a clean house, which centered her family and her friends. Her unrelenting love and devotion to her family and friends will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. Heaven will be strengthened by her presence.
The family would like to thank the emergency room staff at Wayne Memorial, the airlift pilots and personnel at Pitt Memorial Hospital, the excellent doctors and caregivers at MICU and the Palliative Units of Pitt Memorial Hospital and especially the staff of Kitty Askins for the excellent care of Glenda and her family.
Arrangements will be handled through Seymour Funeral Home of Goldsboro.
Visitation is at the funeral home from 6 to 8 Friday. Services at St. Luke United Methodist Church Saturday, 2 p.m., with burial at Wayne Memorial Park following.
