Lettye Sue Dillard Clark, 56, died Thursday.
The wake will be held tonight from 7 until 8 p.m. The funeral will be held Monday, starting at 11 am. Both services will be held at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 601 W. Elm St.
Lettye Sue Dillard Clark was born on Dec. 24, 1953, in Denver, Colo., to the late Master Sergeant Hampton A. Dillard and Rubye Haskins Dillard. She became a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church early in life. She helped in Christian education, after-school tutorial, summer enrichment, secretary and many other ways that the church needed her.
Lettye graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1971. Next, she went to Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va., where she became a woman of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She graduated with honors and went on to become an excellent mathematics teacher.
Lettye taught at Goldsboro Jr. High School, which later became Goldsboro Middle School, where she influenced and exposed young minds to the world of mathematics. She moved on to Goldsboro High School, where she became a mentor, advisor, and chairperson of the Mathematics Department. Seeing the need for a mathematics club, she formed and chartered both Chi Alpha Mu at Goldsboro Middle School and Mu Alpha Theta at Goldsboro High School. Lettye decided to further her education with a master's degree in mathematics at Fayetteville State University. Through her experiences and influential teaching methods, she became a Nationally Board Certified Teacher, and was declared Teacher of the Year for Goldsboro Middle School, Goldsboro High School, Wayne County Public Schools, and a finalist for North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her Nephew, Hampton A. Dillard III, and her brother, Keith L. Dillard.
Lettye leaves behind two daughters, Aletta M. Clark and Lanette P. Johnson of Goldsboro, a granddaughter, Kyla-Elisabeth J. McGlown of Goldsboro, three brothers Hampton A. Dillard Jr., of Durham, Michael L. Dillard (Jeanene) of Wichita, Kan., and Gregory L. Dillard of Goldsboro; three nieces, Liza D. Dillard, Michelle Dillard and Jeana Dillard; a host of family and friends; sorority sisters; co-workers, students; and many others whose lives have been impacted by her poise, structure, integrity, and positive spirit. She has truly blessed all of the lives that have come in contact with her. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all.
