REV. BERNARD NEWSOME

The Rev. Bernard Newsome, son of the late William "Will" Newsome and Lela Baggett Newsome, slipped into eternal rest Sept. 24 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Love Temple United Holy Church, 201 N. Oak Forest Road, Goldsboro. He will lie in repose from 2 to 8 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at McIntyre Funeral Home Ministries, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro. Interment will follow the funeral service.
Bernard was a lifelong resident and attended school in Wilson and Wayne counties.
He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in June 1946 and received the America N Area and Victory World War I medals during his tour of duty.
He attended Pikeville Training School, Veterans High School Refresher and Goldsboro Disciple Institute. Vocationally, he was trained as a master brick mason and carpenter and earned respect for his craftsmanship, having worked for the late Eugene Cox of Goldsboro. He retired from Sam English Boiler Brick and Refractory Co. of Richmond, Va., in 1995.
He answered his call into the ministry and served as pastor from 1967 to 1979. The word of God was forever in his heart as he studied corporately and privately with the intent to learn more about the gospel, contending for the faith that was delivered unto the saints, the word of God manifested through the working of the holy spirit. Former pastorates included St. Matthew Free Will Baptist Church in Farmville, Washington Branch Free Will Baptist Church in Stantonsburg and Giles Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Pine Level. He was the founder and pastor of House of Prayer in Selma.
Survivors include his devoted wife of more than 60 years, Beatrice Thompson Newsome of the home; seven daughters, Brenda Newsome, Staris Morgan, Marsha Newsome and Angela Newsome of Goldsboro, Kay Cox of Pikeville, Sharon (Karlton) Gaskin of Greensboro and LaVonia (James) Williams of Greenville; two sons, William Bernard Newsome of Goldsboro and Curtis Leon Newsome of Davidsonville, Md.; three sisters, Corine Breland of Brooklyn, N.Y., Hazel Exum of Richmond, Va., and Aronual (Bobby) Diggs of Wilson; four brothers, Rudolph Newsome of Brooklyn, N.Y., J.D. Newsome of Wilson, Forrest (Sylvestene) Newsome of Hope Mills and Willie C. (Betty) Newsome of Goldsboro; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Clyde B. Newsome; his first-born daughter, Bernadette Newsome; two brothers, Aaron and Leon Newsome; and one sister, Cleo Newsome.
