PRINCETON -- Thell Carlyle Rains, 86, former vice president with Rains Milling Co., died Friday evening in Johnston Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Princeton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Coppock officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Princeton Cemetery.

He was born May 17, 1923, to the late Marion Butler "Buck" and Ethel Creech Rains of Princeton.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and served as a cannoneer stationed in Rhineland and Central Europe.

Thell was very active in his hometown of Princeton, serving on the town council and as a firefighter for many years. He was also a leader in Princeton United Methodist Church.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his son, Donald Butler Rains and wife, Vicky Temple Rains, of Princeton; grandchildren, Logan West Rains and Anna Elizabeth Rains; and several loving nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Thell was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Grace Hardy Rains, Feb. 22, 2009; a son, Thell Hardy Rains; brothers, Marion Victor Rains Sr., and William Creech Rains Sr.; and a sister, Betty Hess.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton.

Although flowers are appreciated, the family would prefer donations be made to Princeton United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund, P.O. Box 116, Princeton, NC, 27569.
