Died Aug. 31, 2009

Mark Russell Newcomb, 17, died Monday.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Bern Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Scott Thrailkill, associate minister of Goldsboro First Baptist Church, officiating.

Mark was a member of First Baptist Church of Goldsboro and a member of the high school class at Edgewood Community Development School in Goldsboro.

Mark was a smart child and loved life as he knew it. He loved to swing and ride in his dad's truck, go swimming and bounce his basketball. He was involved in Special Olympics.

He is survived by his parents, Stephen and Ginger Newcomb of the home, whom he loved very much; his half brother, Neal Taylor of Pikeville; his special friend, Hope Smith and her children, Ellis and Ariel Smith; uncles, Richard Hardison Jr. and wife, Jenny, of New Bern, Greg Newcomb and wife, Karen, of New Bern and Rick Newcomb and wife, Anna, of Bridgeport, W.Va.; cousins, Parker Hardison, Sydney Hardison, Jared, Justin and Laura Newcomb; and several other special aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family wishes to thank all doctors and nurses at Chapel Hill, Duke, Wayne Memorial Hospital and Goldsboro Pediatrics and all those who touched Mark's life in special ways.

The family will receive friends at Pollock-Best Funeral Home tonight from 6 to 8.
