CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS JR.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Christopher Columbus Jr., 80, died Sunday.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at North Trenholm Baptist Church with burial in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Born in Wayne County, he was a son of the late Christopher Columbus Sr. and Thelma Louise Turner Columbus.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Carolina University. Following college, he served in the Air Force Reserve. For 32 years, he was employed with Blue Cross/Blue Shield in North Carolina and South Carolina, retiring in 1985 in marketing.

For 34 years, Mr. Colum-bus was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church where he was active in Sunday school and served as a deacon.

He was also a member of the Gideons.

Mr. Columbus was preceded in death by his son, Steven Shaver Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Shaver Columbus; son, Philip Thomas Columbus of Irmo, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Columbus and Jerry Price of Elgin, S.C.; grandsons, Christopher "Parker" Price of Matthews and Robert Neil Price of Elgin, S.C.; granddaughters, Reinne Peacher of Las Cruces, N.M., and Kelley Brown, and her husband, Courtney, of Covington, La.; great-grandchildren Alex, Kate and Natalie Peacher and Malia, Gianna and Jeremiah Brown; sister, Doris Edwards of Princeton, W.Va; brothers, Cecil Columbus of Mount Olive, Sandy Dyer of Manchester, N.H., and Jim Dyer of Wake Forest; brother-in-law, Dr. Thomas Shaver of Mount Olive; and many beloved nephews and nieces.
