Eastern Wayne had chances to claim its first Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference victory of the season, but fell short to New Bern, 6-2, on Thursday afternoon.
"Despite coming up short, we competed well in singles and doubles, showing growth in both areas," EW head coach Craig Hassell said. "We had a chance to win this match with just a few points difference. Hopefully, we take this improvement into next week's match at South Central and later in the year when we play New Bern again."
Ava Bowen earned the Warriors' lone singles point -- a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3.
Bowen and doubles mate Amelia Dunmire triumphed 9-8 (6) at No. 2.
The Warriors (1-3 overall, 0-2 ECC) visit South Central next Tuesday.
