Charles B. Aycock gets by Rosewood

PIKEVILLE -- Blake Gipson tossed five innings of 2-hit baseball, a trio of bats provided timely run support and Charles B. Aycock got the better of Wayne County rival Rosewood, 6-2, on a chilly Thursday.

The victory moved CBA to 4-0 on the season.

Gipson was effective throughout his start, striking out two and walking three before being relieved by Jordan Gay.

Offensively, the Golden Falcons were paced by Nick Aycock and Drew Spencer, who paired for two hits and two RBI.

Gipson also joined the party, going 1 for 4 with an RBI.

CBA plays host to Wilson Hunt this afternoon at 5 p.m.

Rosewood (0-1), which entertains Spring Creek today at 5 p.m., was paced by senior Chance Howard, who finished the afternoon with a pair of base hits.

Spring Creek 10,

Princeton 0

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Senior Nathan Bell tendered a dominant performance on both sides of the plate on Thursday as Spring Creek registered a 10-0, mercy-rule triumph over Carolina 1A rival Princeton.

The victory moved Spring Creek to 2-1 on the season.  

Bell paced SC with two base hits and  three RBI, and saw his effort complemented by Spencer Jameson, who went 2 for 4 with two RBI.

Landon Smothers rounded out the onslaught for SC, contributing a pair of base hits.

Bell was also effective on the cliff, striking out six over four innings while allowing no Bulldog runs.

Princeton (0-2) returns to action on March 13 versus Union. SC, now 2-1 on the season, travels to face Rosewood this afternoon at 5 p.m.

Beddingfield 2,

Goldsboro 1

WILSON -- A pair of unearned runs proved costly on Thursday as Goldsboro fell to non-conference opponent Beddingfield.

Josh Hartsfield went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Cougars, who fell to 2-1 on the season. Brody Morton also rapped out two base hits.

Starting pitcher Chandler Patrick was effective from the outset, scattering six hits over as many innings and striking out five.

GHS returns to the diamond on Monday, when it entertains Neuse Charter.

Tennis

Eastern Wayne 9,

South Central 0

Eastern Wayne (1-2, 1-3 Eastern Carolina Conference) notched its first victory of the season on Thursday, 9-0, versus league foe South Central.

The Warriors swept doubles play in short order, dropping just one game in the process, then repeated their feat during the singles session.

Rocky Mount Academy 4

The duo of Sam Dively and Charlie Dees spurred Wayne Country Day to a season-opening, 5-4 victory over Rocky Mount Academy on Thursday.

Dively/Dees turned back Trey Smelcer/Thomas Boyette in 8-1 fashion to begin the doubles portion of the match, then won in straight sets in singles to cement victory for the Chargers.

Greene Central 3

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne used an 8-run third stanza on Wednesday to dispatch non-conference foe Greene Central by an 11-3 margin.

Matthew Kornegay and Lance Wise paced  the hosts offensively, generating two hits apiece.

Kolby Anderson also factored prominently for the Saints, going 1 of 4 with a pair of RBI.

Junior right-hander Justin Edwards earned the win for Southern Wayne, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work.

He also struck out three.

The Saints, now 2-0 on the season, travel to face Wilson Fike today.

C.B. Aycock 9,

North Lenoir 5

LAGRANGE -- Luke Frederick went 1 for 3 with an RBI, starter Cody Whaley tossed four innings of two-hit baseball and Charles B. Aycock turned back North Lenoir, 9-5, on Wednesday.

Blake Gipson contributed to the victory with a double and an RBI, while Nick Aycock and Clay Matthews also scored runners.

Whaley's outing included eight strikeouts and four walks.

CBA is now 3-0 on the season.

South Lenoir 5,

Eastern Wayne 1

Jensen Barwick and Camden Noble combined for three hits and as many RBI as South Lenoir defeated Eastern Wayne, 5-1, on Wednesday.

Noble also earned the mound victory for the Blue Devils (2-1), allowing just one hit in 31⁄3 innings of work while striking out nine.

Jay Wiseman and Landon Ginn provided base hits for Eastern Wayne, who fell to 0-2 this season.

North Duplin 10,

James Kenan 0

WARSAW -- Ricky Cameron allowed just one hit over five strong innings, Colby Bass did maximum damage at the plate and North Duplin rolled over James Kenan, 10-0, on Wednesday.

The victory moved the Rebels to 1-1 this season.  

Cameron was in control from the outset, retiring 11 batsmen via the strikeout for his first victory of the season.

Bass ignited matters offensively, going 2 for 3 with a triple, a pair of RBI and a run scored. David Price also swung the bat well, notching a double and two RBI.

PIKEVILLE --  Charles B. Aycock won two of three doubles matches, then held on in the singles session to defeat ECC 3A and county rival Eastern Wayne, 6-3, on Wednesday.
