Chemistry between players and goals early on led Eastern Wayne High School's men's soccer team to a decisive victory Tuesday night as they prevailed over Rosewood High School 6-0.

Eastern Wayne coach Scott Summers said the boys played as one, getting the ball to each other's feet and taking advantage of their chances on goal.

"The boys played a great team game today," Summers said. "We knocked the ball well. Our biggest thing this season is sharing the ball and playing as a team, and just building the chemistry throughout the season and getting better as a whole. They did a great job today coming off a three day break from Labor Day."

Michael Guthrie netted two goals for Eastern Wayne, while Alfredo Cabrerra, Josh Gross, Sam Smith and Gabe Lee each put one on the scoreboard.

Guthrie and Cabrerra also notched one assist each, while Bryan Morales logged two assists and Angus Dove chalked up one assist.

Summers said after Guthrie drove home an early goal, two more quickly followed for the team and the momentum carried the squad to their wide victory.

"Our overall team effort was great today," Summers said.

Utilizing a variation of a 4-4-2 formation, Summers said each player has fallen into their positions naturally and has allowed the team to find something that works early on in the season.

"I'm happy to see that we found something that works early in the season," Summers said. "Usually it takes us awhile to find the pieces and put people in their places, but so far everybody's been doing very well in their positions."

Summers said he hopes to see this trend continue throughout the season, with the team continuing to get better each game.

"We're looking better as a soccer team rather than just having athletes," Summers said.  "It's nice to see that we're starting to trust each other."
